Pathway to Law | Law Week Recap

February 18, 2024

Law week A SUCCESS!

Another successful Law Week completed as part of the Pathway to Law Program in DFW sponsored by SBOT AALS, JL Turner Legal Association, and Texas A&M University School of Law. Students from David W. Carter High School in Dallas had the opportunity to gain insight into the practice of law from, and network with, several successful DFW minority attorneys, receive helpful tips on creating your brand with a law career in mind from Akerman’s Senior Branding and Community Engagement Manager, Jamese Cherry, obtain guidance from UTA Pre-Law students and TAMU Law students, and attend their first Torts mock class taught by one of TAMU Law’s best, Professor Neal Newman! Carter High students displayed remarkable enthusiasm and fervor for pursuing their passion and purpose, showcasing an eagerness to embark on a challenging, yet rewarding career in law.

The following are quotes from some of our participating attorneys:

"Law Week at Carter High School with J. L. Turner Legal Association and the African American Lawyers Section of the State Bar of Texas was as rewarding, fulfilling, and inspiring as any bar event I have ever attended. The students of Carter High School were an excellent representation of their school, teachers, and families. The students impressed in every way. Special thanks to Texas A&M School of Law for hosting and making everyone feel so welcome." - Jason Mathis, Dallas County Assistant District Attorney

“Wonderful program!! I love that more schools are creating spaces for students to experience various career fields before college. Allowing students, especially black and brown students, to have a hands on feel is amazing.” – MarQuetta Clayton, Owner & Managing Attorney of Clayton Law Firm

“This program hosting Carter High School students at my former law school was a full circle moment for me. They were able to tour my old law school and participate in a mock torts class in the exact classroom I was in one summer before beginning my own law school career.” – Marshay Iwu, Owner & Managing Attorney of Iwu & Associates

Law Week wrapped up with two additional scholarship opportunities provided by Attorney MarQuetta Clayton and an internship granted by Attorney Marshay Iwu! All of our participating students, from high school through law school, will also have the opportunity to apply for scholarships this Spring sponsored by SBOT AALS. If you or your firm is interested in donating to the Pathway to Law Program scholarship fund, please contact Kimberly Godsey at txafricanamericanlawyers@gmail.com.

A huge thanks to our sponsors JL Turner Legal Association and Texas A&M University School of Law, UTA Pre-Law students, TAMU Law Student Ambassadors and BLSA, and the many DFW attorneys that participated each day in leading our future lawyers down their pathway to law! We are looking forward to reaching even further next school year! Be sure to join us!
